Westley Gough forced his way into the medal rounds of the individual pursuit with an outstanding ride today.
Gough posted a personal best time of 4m 17.001s in the 4000m event, pipping Great Britain's highly rated Geraint Thomas for the fourth qualifying place.
He will be up against it in the race for bronze against Australia's Dennis Rohan, who was nearly a full second faster in qualifying.
It is shaping as an Australian trifecta, with world record-holder Jack Bobridge and team pursuit colleague Michael Hepburn riding off for gold.
New Zealand's Peter Latham was also quick, shaving close to 2s off his personal best when finishing sixth in 4m 18.152.
