George Bennett has added yet another New Zealand cycling record to his palmares at Il Lombardia this morning.
Bennett has finished 10th in the storied one-day race - one of cycling's five "monuments" contested by the world's best riders each year.
The 28-year-old's result - finishing one minute and 22 seconds behind winner Thibaut Pinot - was New Zealand's best result in the race's 103-year history. It also tied Hayden Roulston's 10th place finish at Paris Roubaix in 2010 for the best result by a Kiwi in any monument.
Bennett, who already holds the record for New Zealand's best result in the Giro d'Italia (8th) and Vuelta a Espana (10th), was riding in his final race of the season, after a disappointing Vuelta saw him fail to contend for overall honours or a stage victory.
However, he bounced back with a solid 18th place at the World Championships and 14th at Tre Valli Varesine, and despite never looking a threat to win Lombardia, he managed the race well to cross the line in 10th.
