COPENHAGEN - A 30-year-old Danish man was arrested for hacking into embattled cyclist Michael Rasmussen's email and trying to sell the information he obtained to a tabloid, Danish police said on Thursday.
Police said the man was arrested in Herning in western Denmark on Wednesday and has been charged with unlawfully gaining access to Rasmussen's email account.
Rasmussen was sacked by his team Rabobank and thrown out of the Tour de France last month while leading the race for lying to the team about his training whereabouts, an allegation which the Dane denies.
Danish tabloid BT said earlier this week that a hacker tried to sell it messages from Rasmussen's Yahoo email account, including the firing letter from Rabobank and purported information on Rasmussen's training whereabouts.
The paper printed what it said was a screen grab of Rasmussen's email it had received from the hacker, with the sender and subject information blurred.
Police said they found computers and other equipment at the man's home, which they seized for closer investigation.
