Italian Damiano Cunego won the 16th stage from San Vendemiano to Falzes yesterday to seize the overall lead from Yaroslav Popovych, of Ukraine.
Cunego finished 1m 16s ahead of Rinaldo Nocentini, of Italy, and 1m 38s ahead of Alexandre Moos, of Switzerland, on the 217km stage.
Cunego attacked alone 60km from the end of the stage and quickly opened a gap on his struggling rivals.
"It's hard to understand what I've done, I'm just very very happy," Cunego said. "Everything went right for me. I felt good and when I attacked nobody came after me and so I gave it everything to stay clear and win the stage."
Cunego's main rivals for overall victory all finished more than 2m 30s behind, giving him a firm grip on the race lead.
