The Wellington Cycle Classic gets underway this afternoon with the Hutt City criterium.
It is one of the country's top road races, attracting 21 Australian riders.
Stephen Wooldridge is a member Australia's Olympic champion pursuit team and will be racing for the Trust House team for the Classic.
While he has experienced most his success on the track, he is looking to see how far he can go with road cycling.
Wooldridge says the top Australian road cyclists are with their teams in Europe, but the Classic is a real draw card for the next echelon.
He says locally based Australians love competing.
The Hutt City criterium starts at 2:30pm.
