KEY POINTS:
This weekend will be pretty special for the McGlashan family.
Cricket siblings Peter and Sara decided to shout their younger sister Kayla a few days in Sydney and their parents, Peter and Myn, were coming over for the Twenty20 doubleheader at the Sydney Cricket Ground tomorrow.
What none of them expected was the prospect of both Peter and Sara playing for New Zealand on the famous old ground within a few hours of each other.
Sara McGlashan was always going to be part of the White Ferns squad for their curtain raiser against Australia in the afternoon.
But when Northern Districts wicketkeeper Peter McGlashan - at 29, three years older than Sara - got the nod in the men's squad of 13 for tomorrow night's three-hour bash, it made it a real family affair.
"Playing at the Sydney Cricket Ground is really exciting for the girls, then when I found out Peter was included that was pretty special," Sara said.
"The rest of the family were coming anyway to watch me play so Peter and I decided to shout Kayla. She enjoys her shopping so this should be right up her alley," she laughed.
Sara McGlashan is an experienced batsman, known for her ability to play inventive shots and with 73 ODIs behind her. She seems certain to play; her brother is a marginal chance to make the final XI.
New Zealand also have brothers Brendon and Nathan McCullum in the squad, and had Mike Hussey not been left out of the Australian squad he would have been playing with his brother David tomorrow.
But for the women, fresh from their 2-2 ODI series with Australia - the decider was washed out in Wellington on Thursday - being on one of cricket's celebrated grounds for the first time is one thing; being part of a transtasman double act simply doubles the significance of the occasion.
Australia hosted England in a similar curtain-raiser arrangement in Melbourne last season.
New Zealand captain Haidee Tiffen hopes New Zealand Cricket catches on to the idea.
"We've sat and watched games at the SCG so to be part of it will be awesome. Playing a curtain raiser there is pretty cool," Tiffen said.
As for the game, she said there was not much between the teams, who are preparing for the women's World Cup, to be staged in New South Wales next month.
"We feel we have a strong team with lots of allrounders. We bat right down so we do have depth.
"Sophie Devine is at No 10 and she's scored heaps of runs for Wellington this season. That's our strength."
The Australians "certainly believe in themselves; they're fighters", she said.
The countries have met in three Twenty20 internationals, each winning one to go with a tie at Brisbane in 2006.
