Shane Warne has ended talks of a comeback to test cricket saying he is "flattered and surprised" by the speculation of a return to the game.
Rumours that the 41-year-old would make a return during the Ashes series started after Australia's embarrassing innings and 71-run loss to England in the second test in Adelaide last week.
The third Ashes test begins in Perth today with Australia needing to win two of the remaining three tests to claim back the Ashes.
Australia's all-time leading test wicket-taker, with 708 in 145 matches, says he thought about making a return but admits he isn't match fit.
"I must say I was very flattered and surprised that a lot of you out there wanted me to make a comeback and play in the series," he wrote in the Herald Sun newspaper.
"Of course I would love to be out there in the thick of it, but if there was to be a comeback I'd need time to get match fit.
"My general fitness is as good as it's ever been - I have worked hard on that lately - but toiling away for long spells and backing up the next day takes time, practice, lots of physiotherapy and even more dedication.
"I must admit it did cross my mind, but then I woke up in London, where it was snowing, and realised I was only dreaming.
"So, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there will be no comeback in this Ashes series."
Warne also had some encouraging words about Western Australian left-armer spin bowler Michael Beer who was a shock addition to the Australian squad.
"He is an in-your-face player and...this is what the Australian team needs," he said.
"He could surprise many with his ability to spin the ball... He thinks about his game, has the ability to adapt and is a quick learner.
"I'm really looking forward to watching my old St Kilda team mate play for his country and I'm sure our mates at the Junction Oval will raise a glass or two to toast the new Australian spinner."
