KEY POINTS:
Jesse Ryder is to apologise to staff in the emergency department of Christchurch Hospital after inappropriate behaviour in the department on Sunday morning.
New Zealand Cricket was made aware of Ryder's "rude and demanding behaviour" to emergency department staff attending to his injured hand.
Ryder put his hand through a window when trying to gain access to a locked Christchurch bar toilet early yesterday, seriously damaging the index finger and thumb.
He had an operation under general anesthetic yesterday, but is likely to be out of all cricket for at least three months.
In a statement this afternoon, New Zealand Cricket says Ryder accepted that the way he behaved was poor and Black Caps general manager Lindsay Crocker discussed the issue with him this morning.
"Jesse will apologise to staff and after a suggestion from emergency department staff will carry out voluntary work for the Emergency Care Foundation," Crocker said.
"We are concerned about his behaviour throughout this incident and will put a programme of support around him to help him to try and address these types of issues."
Crocker said medical staff had shown an "element of concern" before the opening batsman underwent surgery at Christchurch Hospital.
"There's a slight risk he won't be able to flex either the thumb or forefinger and that would affect the grip," said Crocker, pointing out that would have a major impact for any batsman.
However, Crocker added that there was an air of confidence following the operation yesterday afternoon.
"The surgeon was a little cagey on that," he told Radio Sport.
