Earlier, England won the toss and decided to bat first but suffered an early blow when Andrew Strauss was dismissed for a third-ball duck.
In a half hour's batting before the close of play yesterday, the home side didn't lose a wicket, with Katich (15) and Watson (5) safely getting Australia through to stumps at 25-0.
England are looking to hand Australia their first defeat at the 'Gabba since 1988.
