For years Canterbury have been forced into a swinging door policy with their many internationals coming and going throughout the season.
"It is always tough on the team but we have had to put up with it for a long time," said coach Michael Sharpe.
"We can't and don't use it as an excuse. We do the best we can to keep as many players involved.
"After finishing last in the four-day championship last season, it is time to step up. We need to be more consistent.
"With all games now being taped on video every team knows what is going on. That means everyone will have to work harder for any success they might have."
Craig McMillan will captain the team for the first couple of games with those reins being handed to Chris Cairns when the New Zealand team return from Pakistan.
