KEY POINTS:
John Wright dips his toes into coaching again in October when he takes charge of the national A team to contest a series of games against Australian state sides.
The competition at Maroochydore, Queensland, will be New Zealand A's second trip across the Tasman this year, after they reached the final of a quadrangular tournament in Brisbane last month, before losing to South Africa A.
The former New Zealand opener and captain, and successful Indian coach, signed up with New Zealand Cricket last month, but his specific job description is yet to be worked out.
He's likely to have a mix of roles within the organisation, although probably not as part of the new national selection panel when it is revealed tomorrow.
"I know people are trying to pin us down with a job description, but he hasn't been involved in New Zealand cricket for such a long time it's going to take time to get up to speed," said NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan last night.
Wright, 53, had been viewed as a possible contender for the national coaching job before his old teammate, John Bracewell, was reappointed last month.
But his role is expected to include aspects of work with up and coming talent, the major associations and the national team's top order batsmen.
"I'm definitely keen to help the current internationals if they want me," he said this week. "I don't want to interfere or step on anyone's toes, but I'd certainly be available if someone wanted me to work with a specific player or players."
A panel, including Vaughan, high performance boss Ric Charlesworth, New Zealand team manager Lindsay Crocker and New Zealand Cricket Players' Association manager Heath Mills, are finalising the new selection group, whose contracts ended last month.
