Less than four an over at the 10 over mark- what are the side thinking in terms of a total to chase?
Jimmy: The lads won't be focused on a total quite yet. With the way the fielding restrictions are these days, any big partnership can turn the game around in a very short space of time. The best batsman in the world is still waiting to come out to bat as well.
As we saw against Australia, any total can be hard to chase with a lot of pressure and the ball swinging.
As a fifth bowling option what goes through your mind when you are yet to bowl? Are you constantly watching the batsmen looking for a way to expose them when you get the chance?
Jimmy: I may be a bit biased but I think being the 5th/6th option is the hardest job in the game. If your team is well on top then you never get a bowl, if you're behind the game then you're in the middle of the crosshairs when the batsman are going for everything. Corey, grant and Kane just want to try to keep some semblance of control over the run rate and maybe chip in with a wicket or two before the big boys come back.
Any special techniques or plans to contain AB and Faf on a ground like Eden Park?
Jimmy: Ab and faf are both worth class players so it's extremely difficult to bowl to them in any conditions. One thing they do amazingly well is manufacture scoring opportunities. When bowling to them it's crucial to stay on your toes and be prepared for them to come hard at you. Often AB will guess where you will bowl and try to counteract that as opposed to reacting to the ball. Everyone talks about not premeditating but they certainly make it work for them!
What do the players do doing the break? How much is it relax vs being ready to go out there and analysis?
Jimmy: People do different things. The older fellas will relax and not do a whole lot. Maybe try to order a coffee from somewhere around the ground. Tim and Trent will think up some silly game in the changing sheds involving throwing balls around and trying to hit someone. Corey's a pretty talented artist so if there's a whiteboard or something on hand he might try to doodle some caricatures of the guys to make fun of them.
It's totally about relaxing. The focus will turn straight back to the cricket as soon as the boys are given a time that they'll be back on the field.
Thoughts from here. Can we do it?
Jimmy: If Grant can take a couple of overs to get himself in then this is still New Zealand's game. The run rate isn't out of control yet thanks to Brendon's innings up front. If Ross and grant can consolidate now until the 30th over then Ronchs and Corey can definitely bring it home.
