Hearing-impaired cricket fans are missing out on the Cricket World Cup because they do not have access to captioning, the Foundation for the Deaf says.
It says that despite the fact 1 in 6 New Zealanders are deaf or have hearing impairments, no Cup games broadcast by Sky TV New Zealand on Sky Sport or Prime will be closed-captioned.
Closed-captioning is an option that allows viewers to have spoken words or lyrics displayed on screen in text form.
The National Foundation for the Deaf, Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand and the Hearing Association New Zealand are calling for legislation that would require broadcasters to caption free-to-air, subscription and on-demand television series.
Since similar legislation was passed in Australia, captioning levels have increased significantly.
