KEY POINTS:
Wellington beat Canterbury by 90 runs in a cliff-hanger finish to their third round State Championship cricket match at the Basin Reserve.
The win was sealed with two balls remaining when Brendon Hiini fell to a Daniel Bowden delivery.
Canterbury, who took first innings points, were six for none at the start of play on the final day and needed 350 more runs to beat Wellington.
It was an enthralling day of cricket as the fortunes ebbed and flowed.
Canterbury were in trouble at three for 70, having lost international opener Michael Papps (28), Shanan Stewart (3) and Johan Myburgh for a duck.
But while Peter Fulton was at the crease, Canterbury were always in the match. The tall international, working his way back after a knee injury, struck his second 50 in successive matches and looked in full control as he worked his way to a deserved ton.
He put on 49 runs with Andrew Ellis (13), and another 20 with Corey Anderson (32), before he fell eight runs short of his century when he mistimed a slower ball from Grant Elliott, gifting Neil Parlane an easy catch.
Bowden took the last over and with his fourth ball induced Hiini (20) to give Matthew Bell a catch at short leg, and Wellington victory.
