Cricket: We won't get complacent this time, says Gilchrist

BANGALORE, INDIA - Stand-in captain Adam Gilchrist said Australia were determined not to repeat the errors of 2001 after taking control of the first test against India on Thursday.

Gilchrist, with 104, and Michael Clarke, with 151 on his debut, led the way as Australia amassed 474 before reducing India to 150 for six after the second day, still 125 short of avoiding the follow-on.

"There are still 270 overs left in the game," Gilchrist told reporters. "I still remember feeling cock-a-hoop in Calcutta (in 2001) after day two, thinking it can't be any better.

"We are wiser for the experience. I have to get four wickets first."

Three years ago Australia won the first test and looked set to clinch the series in the second in Calcutta after India were forced to follow on.

Vangipurappu Laxman, however, scored 281 in the second innings as the home side staged a remarkable recovery, winning the game before settling the series in Madras.

Gilchrist is captain in the absence of Ricky Ponting, who is due to miss the first two tests of the four-match series after breaking a thumb.
