Otago are the domestic Twenty20 cricket champions after the final against Canterbury was abandoned in Dunedin today without a ball being bowled.
As top qualifiers, Otago were awarded the title as no reserve day was scheduled.
The weather that soaked University Oval could ultimately provide Otago with a massive windfall as they will contest the Champions League competition in India in October if a place is confirmed for a New Zealand team.
New Zealand Cricket is still in negotiations with Indian officials for a berth at the tournament.
An announcement is expected this month.
