Former test batsman Richard Jones will steer Auckland's title defence in this summer's State Championship campaign.
The seasoned right-hander will take over the captaincy from retiring skipper Brooke Walker, who led Auckland to State Championship success in three of the past four first-class seasons.
Jones, 31, played five one-dayers and a sole test in 2003-04, and made a vital contribution in last season's provincial championship final, scoring an unbeaten century against Wellington.
He will lead an Auckland side who have lost Walker, but have gained the services of New Zealand players Scott Styris and Chris Martin, as well as former opener Tim McIntosh, who is returning from Canterbury.
"Captaincy is something I've always enjoyed and I look forward to leading a side at this level," he said yesterday. "Brooke has set a high standard, but I'm sure I can step up to it."
Auckland coach Mark O'Donnell said his side were fortunate to have a player of Jones' capability available to take over the reins.
"Richard has a wealth of experience, and more importantly he has the respect of his team-mates. He will fit into the role extremely well."
