Injury-prone New Zealand batsman Jesse Ryder has been ruled out of next month's one-day international tri-series Sri Lanka because of an elbow injury.
Ryder, 25, injured the ligaments in his elbow prior to the Twenty20 world championships in the West Indies in May. Although he was able to manage the injury through the tournament it has reached the point where he is unable to throw without pain.
Coach and selector Mark Greatbatch said it was a logical decision to pull Ryder out of the 14-man squad who leave for a training camp in Darwin tomorrow.
"Due to the compressed nature of the tour and his (slow) speed of recovery so far we feel we have insufficient time to get Jesse fully fit and able to take part in any of the one-day matches," Greatbatch said in a statement.
"Therefore we have made the decision to keep Jesse in New Zealand where he will continue his rehabilitation from the elbow injury and return to playing as soon as possible."
The Twenty20 tournament in the Caribbean saw Ryder return to the fray after a considerable period spent recovering from surgery on his abdominal wall.
His replacement has not yet been announced for the tri-series against Sri Lanka and India.
The Ross Taylor-captained New Zealand squad are already without regular skipper Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum, who will both remain at home on paternity leave.
New Zealand's opening match is against India at Dambulla on August 10.
