A slump-busting double century from opener Jeet Raval has put Auckland in prime position to increase their lead atop the Plunket Shield.
Raval - who had not scored more than 10 in his last eight innings - broke out of his poor patch with a superb unbeaten 202, guiding Auckland to 431-8 in their second innings against Otago.
Raval struck 28 fours in a knock which helped set Otago a mammoth 444 to win, being supported ably by fifties from Rob Nicol and Colin de Grandhomme.
Brad Wilson and Anaru Kitchen steered Otago to 38-0 at stumps, requiring another 406 for an unlikely victory.
Second-placed Wellington are unlikely to make up ground on Auckland, staring down the barrel of a big chase against Central Districts tomorrow.
