Northern Districts stalwart Matthew Hart has pulled stumps on his long and distinguished first-class career.
The 33-year-old played 95 first-class matches for Northern Districts, putting him fourth on the all-time list, in a career lasting 15 seasons.
"The passion to keep doing it is not like it used to be," he said.
"I found last summer that at times I was keen to get out there and at other times it was hard to get out of bed, and my performances certainly reflected that."
Hart said his decision was made easier by Northern District's successful season, which included winning the State Shield and some encouraging results in the four-day State Championship.
Coach Bruce Blair said Hart would be missed by the team.
"Matt's experience and leadership really have been invaluable on and off the field. Replacing those leadership and technical qualities will be difficult."
In recognition of his long service, Hart has been granted a testimonial year, which is something of a throwback to the semi-professional years when his career began.
When he looks back on his long career that began as a left-arm orthodox spinner, it's his 14 tests he will treasure the most.
"I guess playing test cricket is something to be proud of . . . and being part of winning test teams."
Hart experienced the highs and lows of being an international sportsman on the 1994-95 tour of South Africa.
He bowled New Zealand to an unexpected victory in the first test with figures of five for 77 in the fourth innings to get the tour off to the perfect start.
However, they were defeated in the next two tests to lose the series.
Worse followed when Hart was involved in the pot-smoking scandal, with Dion Nash and Stephen Fleming.
Hart will complete his bachelor of management honours degree at Waikato University in accounting and marketing early next year, and will then look for work.
