DUNEDIN - Brothers Michael and Neal Parlane established a record second-wicket stand as Northern Districts romped to a nine-wicket win over Otago in their Shell Cup one-day cricket match at Alexandra yesterday.
They overhauled Otago's paltry total of 127 in 31.4 overs, and for the fans in the crowd of about 1000 who have suffered some poor Otago performances in recent years, this was yet another to add to the list.
Otago needed early wickets and there were brief hopes when Joseph Yovich drove and was caught behind off the last ball of Aaron Gale's first over.
But that was Otago's solitary success as the Parlane brothers indulged themselves with a second-wicket stand of 126 in 119 minutes off 181 balls.
That broke the Northern Districts second-wicket cup record of 124 set by Neal Parlane and Hamish Marshall against Central Districts in Nelson last season.
Earlier, medium-fast bowler Darryl Tuffey knocked the top off the Otago innings with a career-best performance, claiming three for eight from his first eight overs.
