After Sri Lanka A declared their first innings at 555 for nine, New Zealand A reached 224 for four at stumps on the second day.
There were unbeaten half centuries for Tom Latham and Luke Ronchi who had shared an 84-run stand for the fifth wicket.
New Zealand were in some difficulty at 140 for four after Daryl Mitchell and Colin Munro were out for 0 and seven respectively in consecutive overs.
Earlier Sri Lanka A piled on the runs, adding 195 in 38 overs from their overnight score. Kaushal de Silva pushed on to 193 while Kithurwan Vithanage hit 116.
