New Zealand were 182 for six at stumps on the fourth day of the second cricket test against Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground overnight, a distant 312 runs from a series-levelling victory.
Set 494 to win New Zealand deteriorated from 78 for two at tea, losing four wickets for 104 in the session.
Daniel Flynn top scored with 50 from 93 balls. Left arm orthodox spinner Ragana Herath had the superior figures of four for 73 from 21 overs.
Jacob Oram (7) and captain Daniel Vettori (5) are the not out batsmen heading into the final day.
