Northern Districts' cavalry of Black Cap bowlers led them to a 23-run win over Central Districts in Napier tonight, keeping the Knights' HRV Cup campaign alive.
With both sides needing a win to have any chance of meeting Auckland in the January 22 final, the Knights' stacked bowling lineup proved the difference as they defended an adequate 166 with relative ease.
Kane Williamson - better known as the Black Caps' batting saviour - twirled four tidy overs of off-spin, returning figures of 2-19 to maintain his title as the most economical bowler in the competition. Dan Vettori got his standard 1-23 from four, while Tim Southee and Trent Boult produced five outstanding overs at the death to snuff out the Stags' season.
The win sees Northern move to within two points of Canterbury but, having played a game more, they still need other sides to topple the Wizards if they're to make the final.
The Knights may have been less reliant on their bowlers if it weren't for an average effort with the bat. 166 is a decent score in this year's Twenty20 competition - in which no side has passed 200 - but it could have been much more.
