KEY POINTS:
New Zealand cricket has lost one of its characters with the death of Noel McGregor, 75.
McGregor is fondly remembered for taking a vital outfield catch to remove Everton Weekes, the West Indian who had destroyed New Zealand's bowling in the summer of 1955-56, to set up New Zealand's first test victory in Auckland.
McGregor, who had a 21-year first-class career, made his test debut in 1954-55 at home against England.
He played 25 tests and hit 892 runs at an average of 19.82, while in his first-class career he played 148 matches and scored 6573 runs at 25.47.
