Northern Districts opening batsman Brad Wilson fell just four runs short of a century in his first-class debut in the closely-contested State Championship match against Otago in Gisborne yesterday.
Wilson was the backbone of Northern's innings, which hung in the balance at 281 for eight at stumps on day two, still 40 runs short of Otago's 321.
Wilson, 19, showed maturity, patience and outstanding shot selection to keep his side in the fray, resisting a lively Otago attack for 264 minutes before being bolwled by Craig Cumming.
Northern District selector Pat Malcon was impressed by Wilson's approach.
"He drove splendidly, played forward well and looks to have a fine future," Malcon said.
Northern's response began badly as they slumped to 106 for five before Wilson gained better support from the lower order.
Wilson and Mark Orchard put on a 52-run sixth-wicket partnership and Joseph Yovich contributed a valuable 41. Anton Devcich was unbeaten on 43 at stumps
Nine Otago bowlers were used, with the wickets shared.
Earlier, Otago's first innings came to a rapid end after resuming at 320 for seven. They lost their last three wickets for just one run.
