Canterbury's Brian Hastings is well aware that he will step into a potentially volatile situation when he acts as match referee for the Pakistan-England test series.
The series marks the return of Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar, regarded as the world's fastest bowler. He has twice been reported for a suspect bowling action.
"I know there will be a lot of media attention on Shoaib if he plays," said Hastings, who leaves Christchurch on Saturday.
"But I have an open mind on his action and will be guided by reports from the umpires during the matches."
He said Akhtar may have trouble staying fit because of his "slingy style."
"The way he bowls places a lot of stress and strain on the body."
New Zealand's Steve Dunne and Doug Cowie reported Akhtar in February at Dunedin earlier this year. The other time was in November 1999, when the fast bowler was playing against Australia at Perth.
Australian umpire Darrell Hair and Peter Willey (England) found fault with his action. Hair and Willey will team again for the first test of the two-match series at Lord's.
Hastings will not only officiate during this series but also the Tri-Nations one-day series, which comprises England, Pakistan and Australia.
