LEEDS - England have been handed a massive boost before next week's Ashes decider with Andrew Flintoff set to be fit for his farewell test at The Oval.
The England and Wales Cricket Board released a statement today that said the swelling in his knee had reduced "significantly".
"Andrew Flintoffs right knee injury was reviewed today by his specialist in conjunction with the ECB and Lancashire CCC medical teams," it said.
"The advice received was that the swelling in his knee has significantly eased following the decision by the England management team to rest him from the last test match.
"And that subject to further rest and intensive treatment, he will be available for selection for the fifth Ashes test at The Oval."
It also said that swing bowler James Anderson should be available for the south London clash starting Thursday week.
"James Anderson also underwent a scan on his hamstring which was clear," it said.
"As there is no evidence of a significant tear, it is anticipated that he will also be available for selection."
Flintoff's fitness is a morale-booster for the England side after he missed their innings and 80-run loss at Headingley on Sunday that left the Ashes series tied at 1-1.
The mere presence of the star of the 2005 series lifts his teammates and his skills with both bat and ball provide great balance to the England side.
The big Lancastrian is a genuine match-winner, having bowled England to victory in the second test at Lord's only three weeks ago.
Anderson, who has been England's equal leading wicket-taker in the series, looked to be restricted by a leg injury sustained at the crease during his side's first innings at Leeds.
His form has tended to be based around the weather conditions, proving lethal under grey skies but largely ineffective under direct sunlight.
