Riding on the back of pace bowler Fidel Edwards seven wicket haul, the West Indies have fought back to dismiss the Black Caps for 371 runs at McLean Park in Napier.
Edwards cleaned up the Black Caps lower order producing the best figures of his career with seven wickets for 87 runs from 29.4 overs.
It was the Barbados native's seventh five-wicket haul in his 36 test career.
His destructive bowling bagged the tail-end wickets of Vettori on 29, Mills on 18 and Patel for two runs.
The West Indies have began their second innings on 15 runs without loss, Chris Gayle and Sewnarine Chattergoon are on 13 and 6 runs respectively.
