A partnership worth 168 runs for the fifth wicket, including a sparkling Mark Douglas century, was the cornerstone of Central Districts' strong position against Otago after the first day of a Shell Trophy cricket match at Molyneux Park, Dunedin yesterday.
Boosted by veteran Douglas' 134, Central Districts were all out for 359 in the 91st over.
Otago reached 21 without loss at stumps off nine overs.
On losing the fourth wicket at 130 just after lunch as the temperature soared over 30 degrees C, Douglas and Ben Smith (74) rebuilt soundly, adding their runs in just 131 minutes.
Douglas struck 18 fours to reach his ninth first-class century off 104 balls after being dropped at point by Paul Wiseman approaching his 50.
His innings overall lasted 163 minutes, included 21 boundaries and was one of free accumulation through a range of shots.
It came to an end when he was caught at long on by Warren McSkimming, the fourth wicket for offspinner Wiseman.
English professional Smith was the perfect backup and survived two sharp but difficult chances.
