KEY POINTS:
Mystery surrounds the identity of the New Zealand cricket team's manager for next week's second test against the West Indies in Napier.
Lindsay Crocker, who has been a highly popular manager for the last five years, was in charge on the recent tours to Bangladesh and Australia. He is with the team in Dunedin for the first test starting today.
However, it is understood Crocker might be out of his job by the time the team arrives in Napier next week for the second test, with former Rowing New Zealand chief executive Craig Ross tipped to be taking over.
In what is a highly unsatisfactory situation, Crocker has not been confirmed either for the entire West Indies visit or the remainder of the international season, which would have seemed a clear, transparent step.
If a change was felt desirable, the alternative would have been to have a new manager in place before the start of the West Indies trip.
New Zealand Cricket public affairs manager Stephen Hill last night said that "discussions are ongoing. There is a process happening" in terms of the team manager.
"The situation is no decision or appointment has been made [beyond Dunedin] on any future appointment to the team manager role," he said. "Until such time as there is any appointment, Lindsay remains team manager."
Which means if Crocker does not get a phone call from NZC headquarters in the next few days, he might be going to Napier. If he does, his time will be up.
At a time when new coach Andy Moles has been talking of the importance of clear lines of communication within the dressing room, it's a messy business, which has been handled poorly by NZC.
Crocker is not discussing the issue and Ross has not returned calls this week.
