KEY POINTS:
English fast bowler James Anderson left the Basin Reserve on crutches tonight, after injuring his left ankle while playing football after stumps on day three of the second cricket test against New Zealand in Wellington today.
Anderson was to bat with Monty Panesar tomorrow when England resume their second innings on 277 for nine - an overall lead of 421.
More importantly the right arm swing bowler will play an integral part in the England attempting to square the series when New Zealand start what will need to be a record run chase tomorrow.
It was not known if he will be able to participate in the remainder of the game with a decision to be made before play starts at 10.30am.
Anderson, 25, was the standout performer when New Zealand were routed for 198 yesterday, taking five for 73 from 20 overs.
Recalled to the test team in place of Matthew Hoggard after England were thumped by 189 runs in the first test at Hamilton last Sunday, Anderson celebrated his return with a fourth five-wicket haul in 21 tests.
He rolled the ankle while the team played football, part of the warm-down process at the end of a day's play.
An English team spokesman said the ankle would be iced and it was not immediately deemed necessary to organise a scan or seek further treatment.
