KEY POINTS:
Sports agent Roger Mortimer is working with the New Zealand cricket team. But he's not looking to sign up leading cricketers. Instead Mortimer, best known for his work with 2004 Olympic champions Hamish Carter and Sarah Ulmer, linked up with New Zealand Cricket several weeks ago on a high performance consultancy basis.
He was in Dunedin before last week's first test against the West Indies and is in Napier ahead of the start of the second test today.
"Roger has had a lot of experience of Olympic athletes and how they prepare," NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan said last night.
"We thought he could bring an interesting perspective."
Mortimer has been watching the squad at practice and will come up with some observations for the national body. He has been working with Geoff Allott, soon to take up the important role of general manager of cricket, national selector John Wright, coach Andy Moles and captain Dan Vettori.
"We look to learn from other sports and bring in new ideas," Vaughan said. "You think of the likes of Sarah, Hamish and [three-time world champion] Mahe Drysdale [with whom Mortimer has worked]. They are champions so you look at the way they approach their sport and what can we learn from them."
