The Black Caps’ hopes of winning the T20 series against Bangladesh have been washed away by rain.
After suffering a five-wicket defeat in the first match in Napier, New Zealand made a solid start to the second before the forecast rain arrived at Bay Oval.
Black Caps opener Tim Seifert had recovered from suffering a nasty blow to the helmet off the bat of teammate Daryl Mitchell, racing to 43 runs from 23 balls following the first-over wicket of Finn Allen.
But shortly after Seifert was dismissed, rain that had been lingering worsened and forced the players from the field, eventually causing the match to be abandoned.
New Zealand will now need to win the third game - also at Bay Oval on Sunday afternoon - if they wish to avoid suffering a historic series defeat.
