Black Caps bowler Neil Wagner was clocked bowling 160km/h this morning by the speed radar at University Oval in Dunedin.
The Otago left-armer was bowling to Dinesh Chandimal on day two of New Zealand's test against Sri Lanka when he apparently hurtled down the fastest delivery in the history of New Zealand cricket, but skeptics have been quick to point out it was most likely a technological error.
Wagner's normal bowling speed is somewhere between 130-135km/h, meaning he would have to make a increase of at least 25km/h to get anywhere near the record breaking reading.
NZME journalist David Leggat commented on the speed anomaly in the Herald's live blog.
"There's a claim going around that Wagner delivered a ball at 160km/h this morning," Leggat said. "If the claim is true, this is further proof that the whole speed gun thing is bollocks. Wagner has many virtues, industry, perseverance, reverse swinging, and a decent guy. But Jeff Thomson he ain't."
