New Zealand have lost the second test against Australia by 176 runs after being bowled out for 302 on the final day in Hamilton.
Chaisng 479 to win, the Black Caps started in positive fashion, Brendon McCullum reaching his 16th test fifty before sending an easy catch to Michael Hussey at gully off Doug Bollinger for 51.
Jeetan Patel quickly departed for three before Martin Guptil brought up his half-century. He managed 58 before edging Mitchell Johnson to Ricky Ponting at slip.
Brent Arnel failed to trouble the scorers but Tim Southee provided some late fireworks, blazing 45 off 25 balls before becoming Johnson's 10th scalp of the match.
