Hamilton's Westpac Park may not host international cricket for another couple of years.
Stadium Management Board chair Glenda Saunders says that may be the case if that's what it takes to get it right.
After last week's debacle when just 163 runs were scored in two innings during an international charity match, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) moved the one-day international between the Black Caps and Australia to the Basin Reserve in Wellington next month.
NZC chief executive Martin Snedden said pitch problems were due to the block of Waikari clay, laid in April, not settling properly.
Saunders is awaiting reports on the block before deciding the next step to improve the park.
"It may be a couple of seasons before we get another international one-dayer," she said.
"We tried quickly this time, less than a year since it was laid, and we're not about to do that twice unless someone can say to me and the board it will be absolutely top-class next year.
"If we have to play a couple of seasons of domestic cricket on it to get it right then that's what we'll do."
The final stage of the drainage upgrade was to be completed in winter, with 12km of sand-silt drains and sand-carpeting still on the "to-do" list.
The enforced early end to this season's cricket at the ground could allow work to start in April.
