A case of covering all bases underpinned the selection of the New Zealand squad for the world Twenty20 championships in England in June.
The 15 was named yesterday - with the 15 players who will be the backups in case of injury - with two spinners, two wicketkeepers and a clutch of players who do a bit of everything.
Big allrounder Jacob Oram, missing from national duty through injury since the second ODI against India in Wellington on March 6, has been picked on the assumption he will be fit.
Fast-medium Ian Butler, who returned to the New Zealand team for the one-off Twenty20 match against Australia in Sydney in mid-February, and proved himself among the most reliable performers, is back after being absent through injury for several weeks.
And allrounder Brendon Diamanti, who acquitted himself well in his one chance against Australia in the Chappell Hadlee decider at Brisbane, has not been forgotten.
"We're really not sure what conditions will prevail in early June," head of the selection panel, Glenn Turner, said last night. "But being able to take 15 players means we have hopefully been able to cover all angles."
