KEY POINTS:
BRISTOL - A lethal bowling spell from Tim Southee led New Zealand to a breakthrough 22-run victory over England in the third one-day cricket international here today.
With the tourists defending a total of 182, Southee took four for 38 to scythe through England's middle order at Bristol's packed County Ground and help level the series 1-1 with two matches remaining.
New Zealand dismissed England for 160 off 46.2 overs to earn their first win in seven matches against England on the current tour.
The 19-year-old Southee, playing just his third ODI, crippled England's run chase by taking three for none in eight deliveries including the wickets of Owais Shah and Tim Ambrose without scoring.
That reduced England to 64 for six in the 19th over.
It looked as if home captain Paul Collingwood would lead his side to victory, as he and Graeme Swann added 65 for the seventh wicket, but Southee removed the skipper leg before wicket for 34 with his penultimate delivery.
Allrounder Grant Elliott completed a fine game by taking the final wicket of Chris Tremlett, caught by a jubilant Daniel Vettori.
It was a slick New Zealand bowling and fielding performance, with nine wickets falling to catches.
Paceman Kyle Mills removed Luke Wright and Kevin Pietersen cheaply to reduce the hosts to 19 for two and New Zealand had a sniff of a chance.
Earlier, Elliott's half-century and some big hitting from Mills saved New Zealand from embarrassment after they were sent in to bat.
New Zealand collapsed to 49 for five before Elliott's first ODI innings of 56, and a rapid eighth-wicket stand of 54 with Mills, propped up the innings.
Mills whacked his highest ODI score, 47 off 40 balls, including five fours and two sixes, before he was caught off the final ball of the 50th over.
It beat his previous best of 44 not out against Australia in Sydney in 2004-05, and helped New Zealand take 50 runs off the final five overs.
Fresh from an impressive ODI debut when he took three for 25 in Wednesday's no-result in Birmingham, Elliott was the only batsman to apply himself as wickets tumbled.
Arriving at the wicket at 42 for four in the 14th over, Elliott faced 102 balls and hit three fours before being caught on the square leg boundary in the 49th over.
The England pacemen shared the wickets, with Stuart Broad leading the way with figures of two for 14 off 10 overs.
