KEY POINTS:
New Zealand one-day international batsman Jesse Ryder can grip a bat but he is a long way off getting in front of a bowling machine.
Ryder is in Auckland for the national club cricket championships following his Naenae Old Boys team from the Cornwall Park boundary after slashing the tendons in his right hand during a late night incident in February.
The Black Caps rookie is hoping to be ready for throwdowns by the end of the month after some intensive physio sessions as he tries to get back more movement.
He has some gym training scheduled for the week between spectator sessions.
Ryder was last week named in the New Zealand ODI squad to tour England subject to his recovery. Peter Fulton will take his place should Ryder's hand not be ready.
Green Island, Cornwall, Hawera, City of Whangarei and Sydenham are also involved at the tournament.
