Cricket: Ryder, Bracewell can't be trusted - NZC

New Zealand's cricketers were ''astonished" at the pre-first test late night behaviour of teammates Jesse Ryder and Doug Bracewell.

The pair out boozing in the early hours of Thursday morning, with the start of the opening test against India a few hours away, have been fined an undisclosed amount.

The wider impact is in loss of trust from their teammates and the national selectors, coach Mike Hesson and Bruce Edgar.

The pair were found to have breached the ordinary misconduct terms of their contract - the other category is serious misconduct - and they received the maximum fine allowable under that. They were charged with failing to prepare properly for a match.

Under the terms of their contracts, New Zealand Cricket were unable to tear up their contracts - Ryder has one with Otago Cricket, Bracewell is a nationally contracted player.

New Zealand team manager Mike Sandle imposed the punishment on the pair.

However NZC general manager of cricket Lindsay Crocker made it clear today the pair have a long road to go to win back the trust of players and management.

''Clearly the greatest consequence is their inability to demonstrate to the selectors they can be trusted within the team environment," Crocker said.

NZC would not tell Hesson and Edgar when they were allowed to pick Ryder and Bracewell again. That would constitute a ban, which they are not allowed to impose.

''They (selectors and team) are astonished at what they did," Crocker said.

''With what the team is trying to achieve as a group they felt really let down by their behaviour. While they're trying to put together a credible international record and there's such a positive (culture) within the group to demonstrate their worth among themselves and to the wider public to have two guys undermine that in spectacular fashion was extremely disappointing to the playing group."

When - if - the pair return it won't be until they fit the criteria of performance on and off the field and have demonstrated a greater maturity in their approach.

New Zealand's world T20 squad for Bangladesh is due to be named in the next few days. Ryder would have been a shoe-in. Now, he's no chance. Bracewell has a broken foot and is out of action for a period of time.

If Otago (Ryder) and Central Districts (Bracewell) wanted to contract the pair for next season, NZC is unlikely to stand in the associations' way. Crocker said if they felt they could manage them within their own provincial environment that was their business.

One level up is likely to be a different story.
