19:30pm: The umpires have called stumps on today's play as it has become quite dark at Macleans Park, Napier.
The Black Caps finish on 47 for no loss after 19 overs, not a lot of runs for their 90 minute stand, but McIntosh (31) and Watling (13) can be confident they can build on their respectable total after withstanding the Pakistani pace attack.
Today's match highlights: For Pakistan, you can't go past Imran Farhat's unbeaten 117 off 169 balls, a much needed stand for the vistors as they looked to be sinking fast after Iain O'Brien's early four wicket bag.
For New Zealand, Iain O'Brien and Daryl Tuffey grabbing four wickets apiece.
For Tuffey his three wickets at the tail end of the Pakistan batting order killed off the Pakistan runs total after a long drought between wickets.
O'Brien's inspiring four knocks early in the day was a demonstration of his fine cricketing talent the Black Caps will sorely miss when he bows out of the international game.
19:15pm: Pakistan bring in spin bowler Danish Kaneria to add some versatility to the bowling attack.
McIntosh (26) and Watling (10) have done well to stay afloat with 15 minutes to go to stumps for day one.
6:55pm: McIntosh (16) and Watling (10) both move in to double figures, runs are coming slowly with the run rate at 1.9 runs an over at 28 runs after 13 overs.
The partnership have survived their first hour together, a good sign of confidence from the pair especially from the debutant Watling.
Tonight, their goal is to keep their partnership intact by the end of day's play.
6:20pm: New Zealand's openers Tim McIntosh and BJ Watling have been restricted to 5 runs after six overs in their first innings.
Pakistan's opening bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer's pace and swing is causing early jitters for the Blacks Caps' pair.
5:50pm: Pakistan finish their first innings on 223 after 64 overs with Danesh Kaneria (16) the last wicket to fall, caught behind off a Daryl Tuffey delivery.
Imran Farhat was the hero for the Pakistani's ending his innings 117 not out, with Tuffey and Iain O'Brien both claiming four wickets respectively.
A pleasing total for the visiting side as early on it looked like Pakistan would struggle to reach the 100 runs mark, Farhat's stand lay the platform to their ending total.
Will New Zealand's top-order be able to handle the Pakistani bowling attack?
5:27pm: Daryl Tuffey picks up two crucial wickets, with Umar Gul and Mohammad Asif both struck down with successive deliveries, unfortunately his hat-trick ball was full and wide to Danish Kaneria.
Will Pakistan get over 200 as they sit on 194 for 9 after 61 overs?
5:15pm: Pakistan creep closer to the 200 runs total, as they finish the 59th over on 194 for seven.
Tim Southee ( one wicket, 52 runs, 15 overs) and Daryl Tuffey (one wicket 38 runs, 13 overs) respectively have opened the bowling for the third session.
4:45pm: Pakistan close out the second session for tea on 180 for seven after 55 overs thanks mainly to the efforts of opener Imran Farhat (102 runs).
After a dismal first session, Farhat was well supported by Aamer (23) and more recently Umar Gul (13) to give the visiting side a good chance of posting 200 runs plus for the first innings.
Play will resume in 15 minutes.
4:25pm: Imran Farhat raises his bat to signal his first test century since April 2004, which came off the back of 12 fours and one six.
A great innings from the opener who has lifted his team to steady ground after his batting partners crumbled around him in today's first session.
Pakistan move up to 169 for seven.
4:20pm: The breakthrough New Zealand were looking for has come through Darryl Tuffey, catching Aamer outside off nicking through to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum.
Aamer is out for 23, 163 for seven with Umar Gul coming in to bat.
4:13pm: New Zealand's failure to pick off another wicket after Kamran Akmal has allowed Aamer(23) and Farhat(89)to settle well out on the batting crease with 153 for six for Pakistan.
A frustrating last couple of hours for the home side as both batsmen slowly take their side out of dangerous waters.
3:50pm: Imran Farhat and Mohammad Aamer have pushed Pakistan's total to 124 for six after 42 overs. After the flurry of wickets in today's first session, the Black Caps have introduced captain Daniel Vettori to the bowling attack to try seek out another wicket.
3:20pm: Imran Farhat has kicked on to 63 runs with Aamer at 12 runs to see Pakistan move past the 100 runs mark to 115 for 6 after 34 overs in the first innings.
New Zealand's best bowler has been Iain O'Brien with four for 15, followed by both Chris Martin and Tim Southee with 1 for 37 and Darryl Tuffey with no wickets after 24 runs respectively.
2:55pm: Another Pakistani wicket falls, this time Kamran Akmal is out for 22 off a Chris Martin ball which he pops to cover point for a simple catch to Martin Guptill.
Pakistan are in real trouble with Vettori looking to kill off the remaining Pakistan side starting with pace bowlers Martin and Tim Southee after the lunch break. Mohammad Aamer is now at the crease, with his side at 90 for six after 27 overs.
2:52pm: Imran Farhat gets his 50! A solid innings from the Pakistan opener hitting eight fours on his way to the half century, his stay out in the middle will have plenty of weight on the visitor's first innings total.
2:00pm: The Black Caps head to lunch with the upper hand as Iain O'Brien ripped through the Pakistan side claiming four of the five first inning's wickets, Tim Southee also added an early wicket.
After initially sturggling to cope with the home side's bowling attack, Pakistan have slowly recovered to 83 for five after 26 over with Imran Farhat and Kamran Akmal sitting on 47 and 18 respectively. The match will resume in 45 minutes.
1:30pm: Iain O'Brien again provides the pressure and claims two wickets in the 19th over as Umar Akmal and Misbah-ul-Haq both fall for a duck to leave Pakistan struggling at 51 for 5, O'Brien is on fire in his last game with four wickets for three runs. Kamran Akmal comes in to bat.
1:10pm: O'Brien takes the wicket of Mohammad Yousuf for a duck via a brilliant slip catch from Tim McIntosh, a massive breakthrough for the Black Caps with Pakistan 43 for three after 15 overs.
12.50pm: Iain O'Brien strikes in the first over of his last game with a sharp rising ball which catches Iqbal Faisal shoulder height on the bat and lobs to Guptill at gully. Faisal out for six, Mohammad Yousuf comes in to bat with Pakistan 39 for two after 11 overs.
12.35pm: The Black Caps have made an early breakthrough with Southee knocking out the middle stump of opener Salman Butt in the third over of the day's play, putting the tourists under early pressure at 14-1.
11.35am: Pakistan has won the toss and opted to bat in the third and deciding cricket test against the Black Caps in Napier.
NZ have made two changes with Tim Southee replacing Grant Elliott and BJ Watling in for Peter Fulton.
