New Zealand were 102 for two in reply to South Africa's first innings of 459 at stumps on day two of the first cricket test in Hamilton today.
The home side lost opener Mark Richardson for four and captain Stephen Fleming for 27 in the 38 overs they faced before the close, but debut opener Michael Papps held it together with an unbeaten 50 alongside Scott Styris on 16 not out.
Paceman Shaun Pollock and spinner Paul Adams took a wicket apiece.
Earlier, South Africa's Gary Kirsten's 137, his 21st test century, lifted the tourists from 279 for four overnight.
Spinner Daniel Vettori had the best New Zealand figures of four for 158.
