The Black Caps have failed to impress with the bat but showed positive signs with the ball on the opening day of a two-day tour match against Jamaica.
After winning the toss and batting first, New Zealand reached 112 for six at tea before declaring. At the close of play the hosts were 94 for five with newcomer Mark Craig taking 3-17.
Earlier New Zealand openers Peter Fulton (0) and Hamish Rutherford (13) had short-lived stays at the crease leaving the Black Caps 17 for two early into the innings.
Fulton fell in the fourth over edging to second slip off the bowling of Christopher Powell while Rutherford was trapped LBW without playing a shot to Brian Buchanan.
BJ Watling and Tom Latham got New Zealand through to 42 before Watling was bowled by Gavon Brown for 7 just before the lunch break. Jimmy Neesham also didn't last till the break either, caught in the deep off spinner Odean Brown without scoring.
The New Zealand wickets began to fall regularly in the second session. Latham made it through to 33 before he fell LBW for Brown's second wicket, leaving New Zealand 69 for five. Ish Sodhi and Luke Ronchi got the score through to 84 until the New Zealand wicketkeeper hit one straight to mid-wicket for 21.
