Craig McMillan emerged on the wrong side of a bizarre Glenn McGrath record when he was dismissed in the opening one-day international against Australia.
The recalled right-hander, who raised hopes of a New Zealand win with a purposeful 37, became the first batsman ever to be stumped off the great fast bowler. The milestone occurred in the 43rd over of the chase and involved a startling piece of glovework from wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist.
Standing up to the wickets in a ploy to counteract McMillan's charging tendencies, Gilchrist effected a lightning piece of work after the New Zealand batsman ventured down the track, his mind apparently set on the straight boundary.
To put the rarity of the dismissal into perspective, McGrath has taken 481 wickets in 106 tests and 310 wickets in 202 ODIs without previously forcing a stumping.
To add insult to injury, he continued on to snuff out New Zealand's hopes of reaching the target, clean bowling Daryl Tuffey to end the match with four for 16 off 9.4.
