With his side down 2-0 and facing a must-win encounter in tomorrow's one-dayer against the West Indies, New Zealand cricket coach John Wright doesn't want to gamble on rushing Brendon McCullum back in to action.
The influential right-hander was originally left out of the limited overs components of the tour to the Caribbean and the US, in a bid to keep him fresh for the two tests and with an eye to what is a heavy diet of cricket over the next 12 months.
But a shoulder injury to skipper Ross Taylor cut a gaping hole in the New Zealand batting lineup and left them light on experience, and the Otago player will join the squad in St Kitts the day before the third one-dayer.
"We will see how he feels," Wright said yesterday. "He arrives tomorrow (Wednesday) and that's probably going to be a bit tight but he will definitely play in the last two matches.
"It will not be entirely up to Brendon. I will make that decision because I want to see how fresh he is and how he has recovered from the journey. Obviously we want to get him playing as quickly as possible but you have to be reasonable and do the best thing for the team. Picking cricket teams is not about individuals. It's about what is best for this side. Let's see how he is."
