KEY POINTS:
NOTTINGHAM - Fighting innings from Brendon McCullum and Daniel Flynn kept New Zealand afloat although England remained well in charge of the third cricket test here today.
McCullum's 71 and Flynn's 49 lifted New Zealand to 177 for five in their second innings at stumps on the third day at Trent Bridge, still trailing England by 64 runs and battling to avoid an innings defeat.
The pair added 94 for the fourth wicket in fading light before both were dismissed within 10 overs of the close, leaving debut wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkins and Jacob Oram to resume on day four.
The tourists were asked to follow on by England captain Michael Vaughan after a seven-wicket haul from paceman James Anderson saw them dismissed for 123, a first innings deficit of 241.
The England bowlers got some early swing but not nearly as much as the treacherous first innings.
Opener Aaron Redmond ended a disappointing debut series with 54 runs from six innings when he was caught behind for two off Stuart Broad in the ninth over.
Jamie How, after topscoring with 40 in the first innings, reached 19 before he pushed forward at Ryan Sidebottom and edged to third slip.
The tourists were teetering again at 58 for three when Ross Taylor played a loose shot to the on side and was adjudged leg before wicket for 14 by umpire Darrell Hair, off a Broad delivery which straightened up.
But Flynn showed courage after a three-ball duck in the first innings and his Old Trafford head injury, while McCullum dug in, restraining his attacking instincts.
McCullum survived two confident lbw shouts from Broad and Sidebottom, then hit Sidebottom for three consecutive boundaries to bring up his half-century off 103 balls.
Just when McCullum looked to guide his team safely to stumps, Anderson enticed him to chop on, ending a three-hour innings where he faced 126 balls and hit nine fours.
Flynn passed his highest test score of 29 not out, looking composed and leaving the ball well, but after a 152-minute vigil he was caught behind off Sidebottom, an agonising 15 balls before stumps.
After rain wiped out the first session, New Zealand resumed today in a seemingly hopeless position, trailing by 268 runs with four first innings wickets in hand.
There were high expectations among the full house at Trent Bridge, with Anderson needing all four to become the third test cricketer - after England's Jim Laker and India's Anil Kumble - to take 10 wickets in an innings.
Sidebottom ensured that wouldn't happen by removing New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori, caught at first slip for seven after a loose cut shot.
It took 13.1 overs for England to polish off the New Zealand first innings, 41 short of the follow-on mark.
Anderson took just one wicket, ending the innings by trapping Hopkins lbw for 15, after a 106-minute stay.
It gave Anderson figures of seven for 43 off 21.3 overs, his best in test cricket.
