Fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan will remain in South Africa for the upcoming two-test series to replace the injured Tim Southee, who is out for up to six weeks after injuring his thumb.
Wellington fast bowler Mark Gillespie, who troubled the South African batsmen last summer during the home series, is also out injured prompting coach Mike Hesson to opt for McClenaghan.
The Aucklander has impressed in his brief outings for New Zealand during the Twenty20 series with his pace and combativeness and will hope to continue that in tomorrow morning's deciding Twenty20 international in Port Elizabeth.
"Mitchell has been an impressive performer over the past couple of domestic seasons and deserves this opportunity following a promising start to international cricket during the T20 series in South Africa," Hesson said.
"Mitchell is a talented and exciting young fast bowler who has the ability to unsettle batsmen with his pace and bounce. We are confident if the opportunity arises during the tour he will perform well during the test series."
Southee's injury is a big blow to the chances of a New Zealand side which is also missing Daniel Vettori (Achilles), Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder (both unavailable).
The first test starts in Cape Town on January 2.
