Lockie Ferguson is the immediate winner, after Mitchell McClenaghan was released from his New Zealand Cricket contract in another nod to the rising power of the T20 leagues.
McClenaghan, the 31-year-old Auckland Aces paceman, is a Black Cap short-form specialist, who has yet to play a test.
He asked for a release, so he could play in the new Global T20 competition in South Africa and the Big Bash League in Australia.
McClenaghan's place on the list of 21 contracted players will be offered to fellow Auckland paceman Ferguson. The 26-year-old has played seven ODIs and one T20 international.
There is big money on offer for T20 players and McClenaghan's stocks have risen, thanks to his performances in the high-profile Indian Premier league.
