Black Caps limited overs batsman Neil Broom has suffered a season-ending thumb injury while playing in Otago's Plunket Shield match against Northern Districts in Whangarei.
Broom doubts he will be back before for the Twenty20 World Cup next month. He expects to be out for up to seven weeks.
Broom's younger brother Darren has scored 119 while captain Craig Cumming belted 160 to give the Volts first innings points at 486 for three.
Central Districts are struggling to make the Auckland bat again at home, as they are still 247 runs behind with three batsmen already dismissed.
Canterbury is 45 for three in its second innings in Rangiora, chasing 306 for victory against Wellington.
